Top Tips for a Successful Interview
Thankfully, not all jobs involve sitting in front on Lord Sugar in an Apprentice-style interview. It’s still important that you know what to expect and perform to the best of your ability.
To help you be as successful as possible, we’ve put together our top hints and tips!
- Enjoy it. You’ve already been shortlisted so be proud of your achievements
- Be smart and prepare well. First impressions count – dress appropriately for the role, plan your journey in advance and allow plenty of time to get there. It’s always worth taking a copy of your CV with you too
- Prepare well. Make sure you’ve researched the company and the role and be prepared to talk about both – interviewers want to employee people who care about the company and have taken the time to understand it
- Greet your interviewer with a smile. Be polite, introduce yourself and shake hands and remember to maintain eye contact
- Don’t waffle! Take your time to think before answering the questions. If you don’t understand a question it’s absolutely fine to ask
- Be confident. Talk about your knowledge, experience and skills that relate to the role. Be confident in yourself and the skills you’d bring to the role
- Be positive! Your interviewer will be thinking about what it would be like to work with you – this is your chance to show why you’re right for the role!
- Body language is important. Don’t slouch or look uninterested. Feel free to use your hands or lean forward when making a point
- Build some rapport. Show energy, a sense of humour and smile! Asking questions shows initiative and make sure you listen to the reply – you’re interviewing the company to see if they’re right for you too
- Leave them with a good final impression. Smile, say thank you for their time and that you look forward to hearing from them soon
